Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

helping a run away

My son helped his girlfriend run away from home because she said that they where abusing her. Her parents have filed charges on him for helping her. they have said that her slept with her. He is 19 and she is 16. They have said that if she comes back home they will drop all charges. My question is can they drop the charges if they go down to the police station and ask them to drop them or is it out of thier hands. I was told that the district atterneys office will not drop the charges even if the parents want them dropped.

Her parents can neither press charges nor can they drop the charges. The police investigate and determine whether they should present the case to the district attorney. Normally they present nearly ever case to the DA. The DA then determines whether to proceed with the case or drop it. Further you son should cease having further contact with this girl. Further contact with her may result in further charges against him.
