is it illegal to make a copy of a dvd for personal use? An example would be if I owned 'Superman" on DVD, is it illegal to make a backup copy for myself to have in case the first gets scratched?

Yes, it's illegal under the terms of the license granted by the copyright holder. It's also illegal under the DMCA to circumvent the copy-protection that's used on DVDs.
