Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

illegal possession of personal property

is there anything i can do to get my jewelry back from my ex-boyfriend? There's are a lot of pieces and worth a lot of money that I inherited from my mom. My ex has recently moved to Tennessee without returning them to me. The jewelry had been kept at his moms residence for safe keeping. He was never promised any of the jewelry and I was assured that when I wanted the jewelry back I could get it, no problem! There was never any ''conditions'' to me getting my stuff back but now that we aren't together I think he is planning on never returning the jewelry to me out of spite. The jewelry isn't his to keep and his intentions to marry me was something I don't believe he ever intended to do. We were together 10 years before I broke it off with him and I feel he is bitter and resentful about that decision and this is his way of getting back at me. Is there any hope of getting back my property? The jewelry is worth $10,000 to $20,000 combined but more than that it is mine and not his to keep and I am heartbroken about this and don't know what to do.

Re: illegal possession of personal property

I would write a written request to him indicating that you consider what he did theft. If he does not respond positively, you can file a police report here locally. This might result in charges filed and arrest warrant issued. Big advantage to you is that you do not have to pay for anything. There is a possibility police will see this as a private civil matter and ultimately will not help you. It is worth a shot however.

Alternatively, you might hire a private civil attorney to sue the guy civilly. This will cost you and the action most likely will need take place in Mississippi.
