Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

impoud vehical

i recently bought a car for my daughter from a private party, a week later the police impounded the car :(they say becuz vehical vin# did not match dmv records) they told my daughter it was on a police hold and under investagation. When the car was first bought by the original owner in 1987, DMV made a typigraphical on the paperwork. this error was not found intill 2004 when car was impounded from the 2nd owner, who i bought the car from. she had all the paperwork straighten out and provided my daughter with this information to take to dmv when she transfered it in her own name. the car was impounded before this happened. it took 2 weeks to get a detective to meet with us at the impound yard. at this time the detective had no information on the car, and we found it in regular impound yard not poloce impound. he still would not release the car. told us to call him the next week so he could find more information. we did call every day he never returned call. after 45 days gone and no response i call the impound yard and found they sold the car at the auction. no notice was sent to us. they told us it was on police hold, but then sold it. isn't there something we can do about this? or do we just get screwed?

Re: impoud vehical

File a claim against the law enforcement agency that that impounded the vehicle. Your damages would be the value of the car. the loss of use of the car and the time involved in attempting to reclaim the vehicle.
