Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

informal probation for DUI + petty theft

I am currently on informal probation for a DUI. I was caught for petty theft recently with about 2 years of probabtion served. I signed with loss prevention that I would never return to the premises. I was also told by loss prevention that I would not get jail time since it was my first theft charge and I may be getting a fine from the store itself. I was detained, I gave up the products, I signed, and I was released. I was wondering if a diversion would be possible and if expungement would still be possible. Would I be going to jail? How much for a public defender be since I don't really have enough for an attorney?

Too bad you signed a confession without consulting a lawyer first.

You might possibly avoid a jail sentence, but a theft conviction will haunt you all your days.
