Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
innocent of stolen checks
my friend and i were asked to go to a new friends home in san francisco to help him with some work he needed done at his home. i am a recovering cam\ncer patient, and insisted that he know from the beginning that things would happen at my pace, which could be slow. it was understood that we would be paid everyday.he gave us checks, and asked that we not cash them until he transferred some funds. after a few weeks we told him we had to go. he said he wanted to pay us in cash, and not to cash the checks. he gave us $100.00. he owed us about $2800.00. we were furious, but we left on bad terms. he phoned after a few days and said he intended to pay us, but he still did not pay. we went to a casino where we knew he frequented, and ask him if he could pay us, he said he only had a few thousand dollars and no he could not. long story short, after several attempts, we finally cashed the checks. he then left a message on the phone like he never gave us the checks and that he was calling the police. today when i went to my bank to get some money my entire ssi check had been taken to cover returned checks they said...his checks.

Re: innocent of stolen checks
Assuming that the checks were signed by this person and that you have witnesses to the work done, you should be able to prove that the checks were given to you.
