what does it mean when the judge says he is going to let a case "trail"?

He is going to postpone the case from day to day to day, for example because there is a trial in progress.

I agree with Mr. Stone. When a judge "trails" a case, the parties must be ready to begin trial within a days notice. The case gets trailed from day to day, because another trial is occupying the courtroom. If it trails over a week, the judge usually resets the trial and the matter is continued to that date.
