Juvenile Detention Trial Postponement

Our family friends have a 17 year old son who has been kept in juvenile detention for the last three years without a trial. Everytime the trial date is set, something comes up where one or the other attorneys is unavailable and they have to postpone. This has been going on for the last three years. Just this week the trial was again postponed for another month. Each time, there's a new excuse. In less than six months, he turns 18. What should be done? This just doesn't seem right.

This sounds like a serious case and it is difficult to advise you or judge the behavior and decisions of the lawyers involved without knowing more facts. Three years is a long time and perhaps you should have an open discussion with the lawyer and if you feel he is not being diligent you should get another attorney. The fact that the kid turned 18 should not change the fact that he should be prosecuted as a juvenile.
