Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

If I knew the answer, I wouldnt need an Attorney

What are the most important things I need to observe of and ask my Att. so I can feel confident and relaxed knowing that everything that can be done in my behalf is really being done or all the motions that could be filed are filed because as God is my witness. After the trial everybody will tell you what they thought was done wrong or handled poorly, but after the trial is too late. If I ask my Att. to subpoena someone I think is important to my case and they dont do it and tell me they couldnt find them when I know where they are should'nt that set bells and alarms off in my head saying danger. What is this guy doing or not doing for me. would these things be a good threashold to measure performance and maybe now would be a good time to find someone else. I have heard the good and bad about public defenders. some right on this site, and I can see both sides and I am really trying to keep an open mind, but I only get one shot at it and I'm starting to have a confidence problem with my PD and that is why I thought I would ask this site for advise. I live in the wine Country,Ca and if any of you have ever tried a case here, You might be familiar with the saying ''Theres no place quite like N??a''

Thanks for your time

You get what you pay for. We get lots of letters from people who thought they would get good representation from the PD. Then the PD shows up on the date of trial totally unprepared and gives the defendant a hard, hard sell on a bad plea (you'll go to prison if you don't take the plea). Most defendants cave at this point thereby giving up the right to appeal based on ineffective assistance of counsel. You might try harder to come up with $ for a private atty.
