Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Do I have any lawful responsability

If a person outside of my family unknown personally by me and personally known by my son calls me and writes me stating he's been beaten and robbed at gunpoint by friends whom my son brought with. He claims my son was in on it and set the whole thing up. My son denies this and no police have contacted anyone in my family. So I have ignored it. However the friend keeps insisting and writing me that it's true and fears reporting it to the police. For reasons that are unknown to me. He asked for my help. Do I have any lawful obligation to help him. In reporting this matter to the police or any help he request. While I'm uncertain that any of these allegations are true.
