Absolutely. Bail, O/R status, DV restraining orders and more could be at issue.

Why hire a lawyer? When you are paroled from state prison you can congratulate yourself on all the money you saved. Seriously - hire a private attorney well in advance of your arraignment. Don't use the public defender unless you want to plead guilty and have a conviction on your record.

It is always best to hire a lawyer well prior to arraignment. If you do not have one at arraignment you can either ask the court for additional time and another arraignment date (so that you can hire one) or get a public defender. Public defenders are often good people but they never have the time that each individual case needs.
