what is the legal punishment for going into someones purse and stealing their wallet

If no force or threat was used, and the value of property taken was under $400, up to six months jail and a large fine. If more than $400 or force was used, up to several years in state prison.

It depends on the sentence the judge gives you. You may only get probation and a fine.
