Is there a difference between assault with intent to murder and assault with a deadly weapon?

Yes. Assault with a deadly weapon does not require an intent to murder, while assault with intent to murder can be committed without using a deadly weapon. (In most states there is a statutory list of deadly weapons, but would-be murderers often find other ways to attack their victims.) The two crimes will often coincide, but it is quite common to see either one without the other.
