Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Are there any legal teams that a person can apply to work for after they complete their degree to help lawyers with wrongful convictions or to prove evidence against in court, something like a research team?

The most famous group of this type is the Innocence Project, which was founded by a couple of members of the "dream team" from the OJ Simpson murder trial. The Southern Poverty Law Center also helps people who were wrongfully convicted.

The NAACP just won a victory for Troy Davis, who was on death row for the 1991 killing of a Georgia police officer. The United States Supreme Court ordered a federal judge in Georgia to review evidence that, according to his supporters, will prove that Davis is innocent.

Actually, I wrote the brief for NAACP in the Troy Davis case and several others at various stages in the past two years. I will continue to be involved in that case on a pro bono basis until Troy is released.

I am in the process of obtaining funding for a nonprofit Innocence Matters, in which will represent people like Troy who have been wrongfully convicted but have compelling evidence of innocence (non-DNA evidence). As of this moment, I'm looking for volunteers to assist in various roles. If you are interested in getting in on the ground, please feel free to contact me at deirdre(AT)innocencematters(DOT)us or deirdre(AT)freetroydavis.com.
