if I made a threat on facebook to possibly harm someone but did not address it to them specifically can they take legal action?

Yes, but whether they can win will depend upon what you said and the context in which you said it. Without that information I can't assess your chances. The other person could seek criminal charges, sue you civilly and/or seek a restraining order against you. Note that, even if you win, your defense may cost you a great deal of time, money and aggravation.

I agree with Mr. Hoffman. Threats are very serious crimes in California. they can be charged as either a felony or a misdemeanor. If charged as a felony, they are considered a strike under the three strike law and can affect the rest of your life. All too often people are not careful about what they put on Facebook. Much that is put on Facebook can get people in serious trouble. I'm glad you are taking the time to ask questions before you put anything on Facebook.
