Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Murder Sentencing

My Bestfriend was murdered and the a-hole who did it was found guilty of 2nd degree murder. 15 to life is what we are told he can get. My question is on sentencing day can the judge give him anywhere from 15 to life? He has no priors and no enhancements, but I have everyone writing to the judge to give him max sentence - life. Am I wasting time or will letters to the judge help in getting a toughter sentence.

Re: Murder Sentencing

"15-to-life" means that the offender has to do maybe 10 years, at a minimum, and then doesn't get out until granted parole, which could be never. If a gun was used or there is another enhancement it could be more. Also, make sure the victim's next of kin sues the guy.
