Residential burglary is entering a home with the intent to commit a theft (or any felony). If a person enters with the intent to steal anything -- even to use a penny's worth of hot water to take a shower -- it's residential burglary, even if they change their mind after getting inside.

The prosecution is required to disclose all of its evidence at least thirty days before trial, but most evidence gets turned over sooner than that.

Your son's lawyer is in a better position to evaluate the strength of the evidence than a stranger on the Internet who knows nothing about the case.
