Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
my nephew & his girfriend were staying with me and brought their dog. They broke up and she lett the premises and the dog. The dog became mine in the fact that I housed him, fed him, played with him, he slept on my bed and I made sure he had water. She asked to pick him up and keep him for a week, but now refuses to give him back. Do I have any legal recourse? In my opinion, she abandomed him and then took him away from his home under false pretenses.

The dog never became yours. Your nephew's ex still owns the dog, so she does not have to give him back and is not committing a crime by keeping him. However, you do have a civil claim against her for the value of the supplies and services you devoted to caring for him.
I realize you have grown attached to the dog, so I'm sorry I can't be more encouraging.
