Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Nurse with petty theft infraction

Hi ~ I was arrested last 12/03 for walking out of a store without paying for a purse and scarf. I went to court, got it reduced to an infarction and paid a small fine. No probation, etc. The nursing board found out about this one time offense and I have to submit certified copies of the court and police report. They also want in my own words, what happened. Can someone please advise me as to what I should write? I am extremelly ashamed and now scared that I might lose my license.

I feel like a lot is riding on this letter and I can't ask anyone else for advise because no one knows of this incident (save the nursing boards.) The police report states that the LP had seen me in the Palo Alto store and had ''been trying to bust me.'' I have never stepped foot in the Palo Alto store so I think he had me confused with someone else. You are my only hope. Please help.. Lisa

Re: Nurse with petty theft infraction

You should have consulted a lawyer before pleading guilty. Now you are a convicted thief, and you may well lose your license as well as the ability to work in any position of trust. Suggest you find an attorney experienced in administrative law to defend you before the appropriate licensing agency, before it is too late.

I strongly concur with Mr. Stone's recommendation. This situation should not be taken lightly. As "embarrassing" as you think it may be, it needs to be handled head on so that greater damage does not occur. If you would like to contact me, I may be reached at 858.405.5881 and we can discuss it further.
