Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

where does one do online research without lexis or westlaw

i thought all court records were public? but lexis charges hundreds and thousands because they archive everything? i can't afford that. my goal was to find people that were proscuted with one or two laws, download the original complaint from the case, get the docket summary, and sentencing judgement.... maybe there are 100 cases...

I understand. Lexis Nexus has a monopoly on the online legal research. Court records are mostly open to the public. But you have to go to the Court and know wich case you want to review. LN organizes and puts them into a searchable database for which they will charge a fee to review.
