Not paying the civil recovery services, what will happen

I have letter of demand that I pay for recovery of merchandise.It also said (if it was not recoverd in merchantable condition) It was, so why do I have to pay and what will happen if I can't pay?

Letters like the one you received are common in petty theft, shoplifting, and burglary cases involving a merchant. The law allows them to sue to recover damages, including staff labor costs in investigating and documenting the loss, as well as merchandise costs.

Although every case is different, it's unlikely that they will actually pursue this in court.
