Petty theft is a very serious offense. Having a private lawyer present with you on your first court date is an essential first step in protecting you from serious consequences, including jail time and a permanent criminal record which could render you ineligible for employment.

What you need to consider is not just the penalty (fines, etc.) but your record. A petty theft conviction on your record, even if you do not go to jail, will affect your future in terms of your ability to find a job, for example.

You should get a lawyer in order to beat the charges or resolve the case in a way which would not damage your record.
