Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Is it likely that a person would be charged for a crime
I was just told that the statute of limitations does not apply for a theft that occurred over 15 years ago. If a person stole a little here and there from their employer and cannot remember the total amount, let's say that it's between $500 to $800, what would happen if over 15 years later the employer decided to complain to the police? Would this person be charged criminally? What would the punishment be? This person did the theft in their early 20's and has never done anything stupid like that again. The person now cares for young children, one of whom is disabled. She fears being taken away from her children.

Whoever told you this was wrong. The statute of limitations has run out on any theft you may have committed so long ago.
