Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Pleading Guilty to a Crime
I am interviewing a person in custody and they admit to me they were guilty of the crime. What is my first step to resolve this issue. Notify the police or close the case???

If you are an attorney you have a duty of confidentiality to your client. If you are not an attorney you have to determine whether or not this is something you ethically or morally feel an obligation to deal with.

That depends. Who are you? What "issue" are you trying to resolve? Why is this person in custody, and under whose authority? What "case" are you thinking of closing?
Another point: the title of your pose is "Pleading Guilty to a Crime", but merely admitting one's guilt outside of court is not a guilty plea.
