When you cannot afford an attorney and a public defender is awarded to you by the court, how do you get a public defender to represent you as if you were paying him?

Public Defenders are usually bright, passionate and well-trained. Unfortunately, they usually have a million things to do and cannot give you the attention that a private attorney can give.
If you want a private attorney, some may set you up with a payment plan, take credit cards, or do other creative things to help you afford their services. The County Bar Ass'n may also have a list of low-cost private attorneys.
