Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Possession of stolen property.

Hi. Earlier I purchased an item on a local classifieds website (craigslist), and when I tried to resell it for profit, cops surrounded me, and arrested me or possession of stolen property. The guy who I bought it from called from a private number, and I know NOTHING about him. The question is, if the court CANT prove that I purchased this item, a I completely screwed? Or rather are there other things they look at? THIS IS MY FIRST CHARGE in my life, by the way.

How much time am I looking for if found guilty? Is there a reason for me to hire a good lawyer, or will a public attourney be enough?

The district attorney has to prove that you knew or should have known that the property was stolen. The amount of time in jail or prison will depend upon a number of factors.
