Why does the criminal justice system begin with the presumption of the defendents innocence?

Because the Founders of this country were sick and tired of innocent people being presumed guilty and being hanged or imprisoned. You don't like it, move to Russia or China or Burma.

Our system of government is designed to limit the power of the states and of the federal government. Forcing the government to prove the accused guilty of the charges against him prevents the type of abuses that government often carry out when they are able to get away with it.
