Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

price changes

I was in Macys where I illegally changed the price tag on clothing I wanted to purchase.. I was approached by Loss Prevention where at that point they accused me of stealing even though merchandise was rang up at register where I was given a receipt. Is this considered stealing? If so what is the penalities for such action?

Re: price changes

Yes, it could be considered a theft offense. The value of the theft would likely be considered the difference between the two price tags. The value of the theft matters because that determines whether an offense is a misdemeanor or felony.

Re: price changes

Of course it's stealing. You stole the difference between what the item actually cost and what you tricked the store into charging you. Did you seriously think what you did was legal?

What penalties may await you will depend upon the amount of money at stake and your criminal history, if any.
