Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Are private lawyers better than public defenders? And if so, how can I find out if
they will take a criminal case for an indigent defendant in bad health, who is otherwise going to go back to an overcrowded california state prison?

Some private lawyers are better than some public defenders. Some public defenders are better than some private lawyers. Private lawyers often have more time to spend on a case than busy public defender. Unlike public defenders, private attorneys do not receive a salary and therefore must charge for representation. Therefore you are unlikely to find one that will work for free.
