Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Progress?

What is a progress report? I pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge last November and I was given 2 years probation and I am to ''volunteer'' to work 60 days of cal trans work! Now I have to appear in court in 2 weeks and have been told this is a progress report. Is this all there is or could I be in more legal trouble? I have to serve 1 day a week cal trans ( I have a full time job that keeps me from serving more) I have worked 8 days so far (due to the weather I have been hampered from serving more!) Will the judge sentence me to jail because I have not done more cal trans work? Should I have an attorney at this progress report?

I had a public defender originally

Re: Progress?

If you have not lived up to your obligations then the judge might send you to prison. You might have perfectly good reasons for being behind, but a lawyer is much more likely to be able to persuade the judge to go easy on you than you are. Call your old public defender and discuss this with him; he will probably be assigned to represent you at the hearing even if you don't ask for him, but it's better to take the initiative and talk to him beforehand.
