Public Def vs Lawyer
sales of drugs as an informent while on prop 36..arrest in custody since 8/25/03, public defender not helping, pretrial was 9/25/03 trial is 10/2/03, can we be guaranteed if we hire a lawyer that the lawyer will get my spouse released..

Of course not. No lawyer can ever guarantee that a client will be acquitted. It sounds like you think the result of a trial depends only on whether the lawyer is a public defender or privately retained, which shows that you seriously misunderstand how the system works.
And you shouldn't be so hard on the public defender. I have seen the work of many PDs and they are generally very good lawyers. They are overworked and don't have as much time for clients as they should, but they really know what they are doing. I have seen some do spectacular work.
