If you have entered a plea of guilty, you would have to convince the court that you should be allowed to with draw your guilty plea. If you cannot afford to retain an attorney then you should ask the court to appoint an attorney to represent you in withdrawing your plea. If you have not plead guilty then tell the public defender that you will not plead guilty. From the few facts that you provided it would appear that a handwriting expert would be advisable to show that you did not sign the checks. Get a copy of the police report and any other documents available. Then call the local bar association and ask about any program they have for referals to an attorney, with criminal defense experience.

If you didn't do the crime, don't plead guilty. Don't plead guilty, don't sign a form that says you plead guilty (or no contest). No matter what the PD says. That way you will get a trial.
