You always need a lawyer before you plea. If you get a DEJ, a lawyer still needs to work out the terms of the plea. If you can't afford one the court will appoint a lawyer

You don't need one, but to have one go in with you is not a bad idea. You can hire an attorney for very cheap to go in with you make sure everything is ok and then help you. You will actually be pleading guilty, not no contest, but this really depends on the court.

It is always a good idea to have a lawyer. Sometimes the prosecutor does not realize that a case qualifies for DEJ, and a lawyer with you will protect you and make sure you are placed in that program.
