Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

How do you qualify to get a public defender? The judge told me if it is discovered I can pay for one they will take the money out of my bank account. But I just resigned from my job because I was going to get fired and I really need that money to pay my bills if I end up doing jail time.

While I don't recommend that anyone use the public defender, if you're unemployed that might be your best route. The judge is blowing smoke.
