Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
receiving death threats
I have a female co-worker who is going through a divorce with an abusive husband. We have developed a friendship, which the husband has a hard time dealing with. I have received numerous voice mails saying he was going to show up at my work and break my legs, etc. This past weekend, he left me a recorded voice mail stating that if I was ever to go near his son again, he was going to kill me. I have made a tape of this voice mail since he knew he was being recorded by our message system. He stated "you can record this and take it to whoever you need, I don't care." I need advice. What should I do? This man has major mental problems and anger control issues. He is capable of anything.

go to the local police and DA with the tape NOW!
I strongly suggest you take the tape to your local police and District Attorney's Office and let those authorities know of your concerns. Also, in most counties you can swear out a "Peace Bond" against this man, which is a court order to stay away from you (of course, a court order cannot physically prevent that from happening; what it DOES do, however, is give the police the authority to arrest the guy if and when he comes near you, calls you again, etc.)
Apart from the Peace Bond, the local DA may wish to prosecute him for making the threats against you (the telephone tape is great evidence of this); if so, the police may have enough evidence to arrest him immediately and keep him in jail for a while (if the bail is too high for him to pay, or if he's held without bail). In the meantime, while he's free you might seriously consider staying at a friend or relative's house for a few days/weeks until this guy gets the message that his threats are only going to get him in more trouble.
Good luck!
