Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I recently was fired from my retail store employer. I found a gift certificate on the ground and cashed it. My employer found out and fired me, they also are pressing charges against me. Since I technically didn't steal from them, I stole from a customer, do they have a case, or should I try to fight it. I would really hate to have a mark on my record for one really stupid mistake. The amount was $200 split between me and one other person who also got caught. And it turned out to be a fellow employees gift certificate. Thanks

If you look at precedent cases in the past, an employee is not allowed to cash a gift certificate they find on the premises. I do not believe the fact that it was a fellow employee's certificate will make a difference. On the job, you usually get into trouble for this.
