Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

reduction of a felony to a misdemeanor

what are the mechanics of reducing a felony to a misdemeanor? over 25yrs.ago, i pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with deadly weapon in california. nobody was injured and i received a suspended sentence with 5yrs. out-of-state probation in new jersey which was modified to three for good behavior. at my sentencing my attorney told me i was pleading to a felony-misdemeanor(?), which could be reduced at a later date. since that time my only offenses have been several speeding tickets and i've led fairly good and productive life in several areas of human service. is a reduction posible and if so, how? thanks.
