Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
rights in an investigation
Two individuals claiming to be from ''Civil Services'' showed up at my house wanting to speak with me about my car being at the scene of a crime. I wasn't home at the time but I have never heard of this department before, and don't know what in the world they are talking about, they are supposed to come back again to speak with me, and I just want to know what my rights are in this situation. I don't want to be harrassed, in my own home.

Best guess they are private investigators. You have nothing to gain from talking to them. Tell 'em to take a hike and get the hell off your property or you'll call the police. And don't talk to the police either. When I say "don't talk," I mean don't speak any words other than "I have nothing to say to you. Get lost."

You have no obligation to talk to anyone, whether police or private investigators. I would not talk to anyone.
