Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
So roughly a year ago I was arrested and convicted on a auto burglary charge. I attempted to steal a car, but in the end I was arrested. Sometime this week, the owner of the car I attempted to steal actually got his car stolen. Now through online car forum sites, he his posting my personal information (address, pictures of my house, picture of my car, etc) all over the place. He states that he believes that it was me becase I am seeing for revenge of some sort. He also states that he came in contact with my personal information because the police officer that arrested me told him. I am currently serving a 2 year probation term, I can assure you it wasnt me. For the past year ive been on a clean path. Now with my personal information all over these websites, the owner of the car, and random members on the forum have made some verbal threats, ie: "yo john when we gonna roll through with the shottie?" "Through the midst of my frustration, ive went out and bought a shitload of rounds for my ar." "ive emailed my friends with his info and pic, I have 2 cities covered looking for him." How should I go about this? Am I protected by any privacy law?

Fascinating. I doubt that a lawsuit for defamation or invasion of privacy would go anywhere. If I were you, I would print out some of these web sites; then go to the news media (your local TV station) and tell them you want to face the camera and tell everybody in town how freakin' sorry you are, but you didn't steal the car, you don't deserve the internet death threats; and please, I beg of you, don't murder me. This of course could backfire on you in that you could get murdered anyway, or wrongly prosecuted. It's just an idea.
