Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Search and seizure law & info.

I am a community college student that is researching a legal topic that has effected us personally, for my business law class. My topic involves a situation my friend and i enountered last year on the SDSU campus. On our way back from the new library we decided to have a cigarette and as we aproached his car we saw a construction tool on a ledge behind his car. My friend knowing what the tool is used for picks it up and explains it to me. At that same moment a SDSU transport van confronts us for help, we decline telling him we just came from the library. Three minutes later we are pulled over for not wearing our seatbelts, which were clearly visible and secured. Well at the peak of our stop 3 chp cars and 2 transport vans are at the scene. The whole time they tried to get us to confess to stealing cars in the same garage we parked in. They searched the whole car and after 45 minutes we were let go, but they forgot to search the trunk and took the keys from my friend and opened and search the contents inside. My question is was this search and incident justifiably? Do you know of any other resources to research search and seizure laws?

Re: Search and seizure law & info.

The local countly law library or university law library should have a copy of Bell's Compendium. This is the best source I am aware of for the law on searches.
