I'd go to treaties on criminal law such as CEB's, California Criminal Law, Procedure and Practice. Every county has a law library and numerous county courthouses have a small but more than adequately equiped law library to satisfy your curiosity. Most public libraries carry the California Annotated Codes, and the codes (un-annotated) are available on the California Legislature's Web Site. There was at one time a publication called Bell's Compendium that was also very useful. I haven't seen it in several years.

Good hunting.

Thanks for your inquiry. Nolo Press's website has an excellent short article on search warrants and the limits of police on their website at:

Best of luck, and if you have any other questions, please feel free to email my office.

Robert and Victor have given you some of the MANY different places you could look to do your own research into the warrant question, but unless you're a lawyer, the information won't really help you much, and may even get in the way. (A little knowledge is a dangerous thing...) I'd recommend that you have a consultation with a criminal lawyer near where the case is. Most criminal lawyers give free consultations. Take one or two, ask a bunch of questions, then decide where to go from there. If your case is in LA, don't hesitate to call me for a free consultation.
