Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Find a college with a good criminal justice program. Take legal writing, public speaking, and any kind of moot court programs you can find. Good luck.

Following Mr. Ball's advice can't hurt, but it probably won't help very much either. You will need to go to college and then law school in order to become a D.A., but neither the law school admissions committees nor the D.A. personnel offices will much care what you study in college.

Choose a major that interests you and be sure to take many classes that require analytical skills, creative thinking and clear writing. One or two law-related classes might help a bit, but they won't be terribly important. You are more likely to do well if you choose a program that interests you instead of one you (incorrectly) think will appeal to the admissions officers. If you have a good academic record and develop the skills I have listed, you should do well in the law school admissions process regardless of your major.

You seem to be concerned about what classes to take as a high school senior, but you shouldn't be. Just take the courses that will best prepare you for college. Trying to specialize in law -- let alone in a particular field of law -- at your age would be counter-productive, assuming it's possible at all.

As a former deputy district attorney I totally agree with Me Hoffman. As a lawyer, either a prosecutor or defense, you will spend alot of time reading, writing, and speaking. So reading comprehension, writing courses and speech or theater will be tools you will use your entire career. I love how no one on this site gives any real advice.

1. Forget everything you ever saw on television about what you thought a DA does.

2. Keep your nose clean. This includes from refraining from shoplifting at K-mart, regardless of how "kool" it seems.

3. Obtain a Bachelor's Degree from an approved undergraduate school.

4. Attend an ABA accredited law school. Get really good grades, especially in Criminal Procedure.

5. Take and pass the bar exam.

6. Kiss the butt of anyone important to get the job as a deputy DA.

7. When the election comes, put in and run for office as a DA. Pray that no one has any photos or evidence of you doing anything improper during the election.
