Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

When 'sentencing' occurs, after a conviction with ''special
circumstances'' , is ''life w/o the possibility of parole'' the only choice here ? If so, does the convict stay in custody forever ? It seems as though, even Charles Manson has parole hearings... Thank You
