Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

shoplifting

What options do you have when you're arrested for petty theft shoplifting and it's your first offense? Is there any way to get it taken off your record? Who do you talk to to do this? Do you make a deal with the DA? What should you do first - make a court date appointment, or go in to the police station to get booked, or talk to the DA? What kind of punishments or what amount of fines are to be expected, and what is the worst case scenario?

One word of advice, and only one: SEE A CRIMINAL LAWYER BEFORE DOING ANYTHING! I've read the other two replies and intend only to suppliment their advice.

Don't go off and talk to anyone exept your own attorney. The court or D. A. will send you a notice to appear in court, and the court will appoint a Public Defender to represent you if you can't afford an attorney.

You're not the first person to be prosecuted for shop lifting. There is a procedure that you're obviously not familiar with. So go slow and ask your attorney lots of questions.
