I would like to know what is the typical sentence for being caught for the first tike for shifting tags for at a retail store.

Depending, your involvement, that is did you work for the vendor, upon the amount involved, the attitude of the store, the district attorney and the judge, it could range from a simple fine to a short time in jail.
