shoplifting-merchandise returned but letter demands money
My friend took some shoes from Nordstrom but she got busted at the door and never even left the store with them. Now she got a letter saying she owes $400. Is this legal? Is there a law saying she has to pay back $400 for shoes that got returned? Is this a scam? Shouldn't they take her to small claims court if they have beef?

Re: shoplifting-merchandise returned but letter demands money
If your friend has a pending criminal case she should retain an attorney or request a public defender to represent her. She may have a defense to the theft charge. However, if she plead guilty or no contest to the charge the store has the right to collect for its damages. Most large chain stores have a set amount they request for damages.
