Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
solicitation letters from lawyers
Soon after my arrest I started receiving letters from attorneys trying to solicit me as a client. If a family member or friend told you they were considering hiring one these attorneys to represent them in a felony case, what advice would you give them?

I do not want to offend anyone and I am sure there have been some perfectly reputable and honest attorneys who used these types of advertising techniques at one point or another. That said, in my book, lawyers who engage in these practices are bottom feeders and I would absolutely stay away from them.
One good way to find a good criminal lawyer, if you do not know one, is to contact a reputable lawyer you know, or someone you trust knows, in any area of law. Such a lawyer should have a personal stake (his or her reputation), know-how and instincts to find a good referral for you.

Jail mail is a common source of criminal advertising. Do your own research and hire a criminal defense attorney that you are comfortable with.
