Possession of stolen property is a wobbler, which means it can be charged as a felony with a potential maximum prison term of a three years, or a misdemeanor that can punished by up to a year in jail. There can be other charges for carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a loaded weapon, etc.

All cases are different, and your son needs an attorney to help him. If you can't afford to hire an attorney, he should ask the judge to appoint the public defender to represent him when he goes to court for the first time.
