If I steal gold from my mom and sell it to someone else and my mom doesn't press charges on me but presses charges on the guy I sold it to, will I still get in trouble with the law?

You could. It's not up to your mom on whether or not charges get filed, it's up to the prosecutor.

The gold was stolen. The police will investigate anyone who has culpability. Really stealing from your mom?

You could be charged with conspiracy, burglary and theft. The man could be charged with conspiracy and perhaps with theft also.
