Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Stolen

I am missing fifteen hundred bucks in baseball cards from my collection. I think my roommate (he is moving out at the end of Summer) is stealing them from me but I have no proof other than I found one of the missing cards in his room and he denies knowing how it got there! And does not offer me an explanation why the cards are gone. He thinks I am overblowing things. Can I call the cops and report it? Maybe have my roomate investigated and questioned? I just don't think the cops will take this seriously! Is it worth my time? Even if he is guilty what kind of punishment can he get? I say none other than to pay me the value of the damn cards! But then I have heard folks get years of going to jail for taking less! True?

Re: Stolen

You can report the theft to the police. They have resources for investigating theft that you do not have. If he is charged and found guilty you can report the loss and he will be ordered to reimburse you for your loss.
